Northumberland Holiday

I finally managed to get the kids blogs up to date, so have already really more than covered our holiday with those. But, from my point of view, I had a lovely time.

The place we stayed, Village Farm, was really lovely, the accommodation really well set up, and all the facilities were great. Minor observations to the negative, the pool was a little cool, and the climbing frame a bit adventurous. Tully wasn't able to play on it on her own with out help.

One highlights for me was watching Tully go round Warkworth Castle. Mark took her into each area on her own first and told her all about it, and then she insisted on taking me and then her Grandparents and giving us all a lesson! Still, since we've been home she has drawn lots of pictures of castles, including lots of accurate details, so I suppose it can't be a bad thing.

Other highlights were having a treatment in the spa and escaping the family for a while, having a couple of nights out whilst Mum and Dad babysat, seeing how much fun Tully had getting COMPLETELY soaked at Alnwick Garden, going back and reminiscing at Embleton and Low Newton-by-the-Sea and the trip to Whitehouse Farm.

I've already looked to work out when we can go back next year so I think it may become an Evans Tradition...

Back to Work

I went back to work this week. It felt really strange on Tuesday morning, and I felt surprisingly nervous. Dropping Harry off at nursery I felt really awful - I don't remember feeling the same level of anxiety at leaving Tully.

Once I got to work though it was weird how within about 2 hours it was like I'd never been away! I'd planned to leave early so Harry didn't have too long a day, but got caught up in a meeting so Mark went to get him instead.

He survived remarkably well. Tully was cross because she'd gone to visit him 3 times and he was asleep on 2 of the visits! They said he was very good and so placid (which he is), and they barely had a murmur out of him. Apparently he is getting lots of attention because it's been a while since they've had such a little baby, so everyone wants to look after him! I can imagine he's lapping it up!

Raising Children

I've been reflecting recently on how my experience of raising Harry to date differs from my memories of raising Tully in the first 6 months. Everyone always told me it would be easier with a second and whilst I'm not saying I didn't agree I hadn't realised how different the experience would be. There's clearly no one single reason for this, but is down to a combination of changes in my attitude, Harry himself and having learnt from some of the mistakes I made first time around.

One BIG difference this time is that Harry sleeps so well. He's been sleeping right through (mostly) from about 16 weeks, something that Tully didn't do until she was 1! He also sleeps well during the day - with Tully I often only got one 30 minute nap out of her all day, whereas Harry will have two good 90 minute sleeps. I also learnt from Tully that it really is best to just put them down and leave them alone when they are tired rather than holding them, and he puts himself to sleep really well whereas I always had to fight to get Tully to rest.

Another difference is that with Tully I was always eager to be on the next stage, under some misapprehension that things would get easier. This time I know it gets harder before it gets better and am holding Harry back as a result!

The most obvious example of this is weaning - the experts say that babies don't need food until they are 6 months old. With Tully, primarily as she slept so badly, I assumed she was hungry and started weaning her at 4 months and a week. It didn't work at all, but once you start giving food they want it, so from that point had to cater for her on excursions instead of just being able to take a bottle. With Harry I waited until he was 5 1/2 months, and would have waited longer if I hadn't wanted him to have been mostly weaned when he starts nursery next week.

So far I am enjoying Harry much more as a baby than I did Tully. Looking back I'm fairly sure I had some mild post-natal depression but in typical Katie style didn't want to admit to anyone, myself included, that I wasn't coping.

Having said all that, whilst I love him loads and do think it's fun to watch him develop and learn new things, I'm still not really a baby person and am looking forward to when he's 2ish and a useful communicative person rather than a useless lump.

Visitors!

Just in case everyone isn't already bored of reading about Lindsey's visit up north on Tully's and Harry's blogs I thought I'd add a quick post here on it too! This post is mostly to sate Mum's curiosity as there wasn't a good photo of either George or Lindsey on either of their posts! We did have a really nice time and it was lovely to see everyone, and although I know I always say this I am determined that we don't go so long without seeing each other again...

Problem is I haven't got a wonderful one of Lindsey beyond the one of us making biscuits - this is probably next best at the park.

But here's a rather cute one of George.

New fence!

I am very excited and pleased with our new fence. The old fence panels were rotten beyond belief but we never seemed to quite get around to replacing them. Last week however I risked a trip to a local cement company (!) that also sells and delivers good quality panels at a very reasonable rate, and they delivered the panels to me later that day.

We enlisted Matt from next door tohelp slot them all into place and hey presto! Job done! It looks fab and if I'd remembered to take a picture before it got dark I'd post it to show you all. Still, gives me a job for tomorrow...

Going back to work

I met up with my boss last week whilst he was over from the US to arrange going back to work. I can't believe I've had almost 6 months off - it has gone by quickly and looking back I feel I should have done more with the time. On the other hand, the point of mternity leave is that you've got a pesky small baby to look after which means doing more is somewhat restricted.

Whilst I plan to make the most of my last few weeks off, but I am also looking forward to going back too. I somehow feel 'lost' when not working, but think it's a bit sad that I need my work to help define me. Shouldn't family be enough?

My Wonderful Tully - Aged 4

As it's Tully's birthday I wanted to take a leaf out of the Braithwaites blog and do a bit of an update on her!

Personality:
Tully is incredibly generous and will happily share anything she has - even if she's had to work hard to earn a couple of biscuits or some sweets she'll still give most of them away. She is very caring and loving, and looks after us all and does her best to cheer me up when I am sad (also read hormonal!)... She is very competitive and suggesting a race to do something is often the only way to get anything done, but she often loses deliberately right at the last minute so Mark and I get our turns at winning too. She is mostly happy and obliging, but has the attention span of a goldfish which can be incredibly frustrating.

Skills:
Tully is very clever in some areas well beyond her age: her vocabulary, common sense, general knowledge, and maths / number skills to name a few, but behind in other areas such as writing and anything involving spatial awareness.

Looks:
Tully is very tall for her age - she's been wearing aged 5-6 tops for a few weeks now although she's still in aged 4-5 trousers. She has long light brown hair that I very rarely allow her to wear down as it turns into a birds nest that's impossible to brush within about 30 seconds of her being let loose! I'm biased but she's very pretty, and has the most gorgeous blue eyes with long dark eyelashes.

Likes:
Spaghetti (or any pasta as long as it's plain with a little butter), The Wonder Pets, Holly, books and stories, anything pink, Harry, singing and dancing, swimming, being creative and making things.

Dislikes:
Vegetables, being in trouble, getting dressed, boys(!), kisses, tickles.

Things we love about her:
Her generosity, her enjoyment of any kind of outing or activity, her sense of humour, her loving nature.

Things that drive us bananas:
Her inability to listen requiring us to repeat ourselves at least 10 times before she responds, her faffing and dawdling, her dislike of most non pasta based food, and getting her ready in the morning.

Are we or aren't we?

We have had plans to travel to Lincolnshire today for some time. The snow meant we had to assess whether the trip was still on. We dont' actually ahve any snow here mind, but there's lots in Lincolnshire so I phoned Mum first thing this morning to see if we ought to still travel. She said not, so Tully very sadly and reluctantly got dispatched to nursery.

At 9am Mum got in touch to say that in fact all the roads were clear and maybe we could go after all! So I rushed round the house like a nutter going from a state of zero packed to everything packed and in the car, and Harry fed up ready for the journey in about 50 minutes!!!!

Tully was sooo pleased when I went in to pick her up - normally she hates to leave but today came and got ready straight away even though she was in the middle of play dough time!!!

Houses

Some of you may be aware that we've been ruminating with the idea of moving. A couple of weeks ago we got a couple of valuations on our house, and this last weekend we went to view a few houses that ticked all the boxes of things we'd ideally like in a new house.

Based on the valuations we received for both selling and renting we decided that if we were to move we'd not sell this place and become landlords!!! I don't suppose you know anyone that would want to rent a 3 bed semi in Sale do you? :)

All 4 houses we went to see would make a lovely home for us, and all meet our list of 'Must Haves' which makes it rather tricky to choose between them. So, after almost 5 years of talking about moving are we really about to get ourselves in gear and do it? Watch this space to find out!

Tully

It was odd not having Tully here on Friday night when she went to her sleepover at Holly's. It's not that I'm not used to having time away from her - I estimate I've had close to 150 nights away from her in all - but this is the first time I've been at home without her. Still, she had a lovely time, both her and Holly were apparently very well behaved and we are now looking forward to a return visit!

As she missed her swimming lesson yesterday morning (we decided a sleepover was a special enough treat to warrant missing it for once) I took her this afternoon. It was lovely to spend some time with her without being distracted by Harry, as whilst I've had plenty of trips out without him they've almost all been for exciting things like going to the supermarket, or to take Tully to her swimming lesson when we don't actually spend any time together.

Linsey and Beth

Harry and I drove over to Glossop to see Linsey and Bethany. Beth is only 6 weeks old and very very cute. I thougth she'd look tiny next to Harry but whilst Harry was obviously bigger than her she wasn't as diddy next to him as you'd expect. It was lovely to see them both - hopefully they'll manage to come for a return visit soon.

School Dilemma

We have to decide which school to put as first choice for Tully pretty soon, so we've been to have a look around the 2 schools nearest to us. You wouldn't think 2 schools could be so different!

We are in the catchment area for Templemoor Infant School, twinned with Moorlands Junior School. Templemoor is lovely and we'd probably not look at other options except that there are always slightly odd rumours about Moorlands... The other school we've looked at is Springfield Primary School in the centre of Sale. It has a very good reputation but is oversubscribed so although we are right on the border of the catchment area (and in actual fact closer to them that Templemoor) it's by no means certain that we'd get a place.

As I said the 2 schools appear to be complete opposites in terms of approach: Mark labelled Templemoor as a 'Hippy' school - the Head's philosophy is that kids should be kids: they'll be encouraged yet allowed to progress at their own rate, she doesn't believe in giving homework as they've had enough to cope with being at school so just encourages parents and children to read together daily plus some simple suggestions to re-enforce whatever they've been learning during the day. He has labelled Springfield as 'Victorian' - things seemed much more serious and more grown up, and more academically focused.

Having been to look around hasn't really helped as I think Tully would like and do well at both but in different ways. Ho hum - time to flip a coin?

House stuff revisited

During the last few weeks of waiting for Harry to arrive I started a few mini projects around the house. The majority did get completed at that time but the fitting of the internal doors somehow passed me by and only got finished this week... The door frames still need painting though and whilst I'm already very pleased with them they'll look really fab once that's done.

I've also had another clear out in an attempt to get the amount of junk lying around the house down to a minimum and keep the place looking vaguely respectable. Not easy it has to be said but I feel like I'm making progress. I'll probably pop to IKEA soon to pick up a few bits and pieces to assist with storage so I'll post some photos when I'm finally happy with my work!

Dinosaur Sandwiches

After the success ofTully's bear sandwiches at Mum's house I was quite excited to spot this dinosaur sandwich cutter from Lakeland.

It arrived today and I've never seen Tully's food vanish so quickly, and a second round of sandwiches be demanded and equally quickly demolished. Hurrah for dinosaur sandwiches!

New Year Resolution

I don't normally make resolutions... But whilst I've been working on the blogs the last few days it has struck me that I have very few pictures to upload. So I have resolved to remember to take the camera with me when we do 'blogable' activities, and when I do rememeber to take the camera I will also remember to take some photos!

Christmas

I had a really lovely Christmas, other than Harry being a little high maintenance... Tully however was wonderful and more than made up for him being such a pain.

Highlights for me from our time in Lincolnshire include, in no particular order:
  • Watching Tully opening her stocking
  • Christmas dinner
  • Mum offering and carrying out a full night on duty with Harry
  • Meeting Sam and Abigail when we went to Dall's to see Gran, as well as seeing Andrew and Steven as I've not seen them for a few years
  • Spending a few minutes at Lincoln Crem saying goodbye to Grandpa
  • Taking Tully to the fab play area at Surfleet

Mark's finally succumbed

Traditionally, every year we go to visit Mark's Nan and Grandad on the last Sunday before Christmas. Sadly Mark has finally caught the cold that I've been fighting for 2 weeks so we phoned them to postpone until after Christmas...

Really really poorly

I've had a cold / flu for about a week now, and in comparison to how I was I'm now much better. Last Thursday and Friday I could barely move, had a raging fever and just felt the worst I have ever felt for as long as I can remember. Luckily Harry was mostly well behaved on those days otherwise I'd never have survived. Both he and Tully are now suffering, although both seem to be coping better than I did. So now there's just Mark to catch it! Who's betting he has it over Christmas???

Surprise Visit

Chrissy popped in today to feed Izzy on route to the Wirral to visit her parents. It was a flying visit but lovely to see them both.

Present wrapping unhelper

I foolishly thought Tully would be helpful when it came to wrapping presents so I got everything out and we set too. Now, every year I buy a tin of biscuits or chocolates for some family members so I don't feel bad about spoiling any surprises by telling this story, other than the surprise that I may have been more creative this year....

The first presents we are to wrap are the aforementioned tins of edible delights when Tully says she'd like them for herself. I tell her that they are for other people and sometimes we give presents we'd like for ourselves to others. She thinks for a few seconds.

"But Mummy, it'll go off! You can't give food as presents. That's just madness! So we'll have to eat them all up now!" ('That's just madness' is her favourite phrase of the moment...)

Nice try mate. But being the meany I am I didn't listen to her so you can look forward to your gone off tins next week!

How not to explain a grown ups party to a 3 year old.

Today Mark is going on a work night out, starting out in the middle of the afternoon. Tully also had her nursery Christmas party today. When we get home after I've picked her up we have the following conversation...

Tully: Where's Daddy?
Me: He's got his Christmas party today too.
T: Ooo, will he play pass the parcel?
Me: No, you don't play party games really at grown up parties.
T (sounding both incredulous and outraged!): No party games!!!?!?!? So what will he do at his party?
Me: Well, he'll have some food, drink beer and chat.
T: That sounds really boring...
Me: That reminds me, don't jump on Daddy's head in the morning as he'll be feeling a bit poorly. (Tully likes to wake Mark up every day by bouncing on him...:)
T: Why will he be feeling poorly?
Me: Because he'll have drunk a lot of beer and beer makes people feel poorly so we'll have to be gentle with him.
T: So there are no games at Daddy's party, and he'll feel poorly tomorrow because all there was to do was drink beer...
Me: Yes, something like that.
T: Hmm, that's just madness.

I had to agree...

Top Gadget

Since Harry was ill I have been a little obsessive with monitoring his temperature. The thermometer I'd bought when Tully was a baby had stopped working so having decided I needed to buy a new one I decided to get a better one this time. After some research I decided on the Brother Max 3-in-1 thermometer.

I am so pleased with it. First off it comes in really funky packaging, but once inside it's really simple to use, quick, doesn't need covers like the Braun one, and has a travel case too.

It's the first time in ages that I've been so impressed with any purchase and I highly recommend it.

Surrounded by idiots

I think it's fair to say that one of my less attractive character traits is a complete and utter lack of patience with stupid people, and today I've been surrounded by them! And you may be surprised to hear I'm not talking about Harry or Mark! :)

First off the health visitor came to see us again today. I've been assigned to a different health visitor to when I had Tully. She came a couple of weeks ago and I found her a bit wet, patronising and irritating but thought I'd give her the benefit of the doubt but she really got on my nerves today. When she left I lay Harry on the sofa whilst I saw her out and she told me that it's a very bad thing to do. I'd been doing my best to be polite in the face of her irritating ways (not something I'm good at) and had done well until this point where I commented that if he rolled off he'd only do it once unless he was very stupid... I know she was just doing her job but I'd had enough. Mark commented later that it's probably best not to antagonise her up as she'll be on the look out for child abuse. Mmmm...

She's coming back in a couple of weeks to do the 'baby blues' questionnaire to see if I've got postnatal depression. I remember it from last time and was the most pointless thing I've ever encountered - I don't believe that it would help identify someone that does have postnatal depression at all. I wonder if there's a new answer in the multiple choice to indicate that I wasn't depressed until I had to put up with her banal conversation for half an hour...

The other idiot was the cleaner that forgot her key. I was there when she arrived so let her in but later I walked into town, only to get a call from her later asking if it was ok for her to leave the house unlocked when she'd finished. Of course it isn't you stupid woman... So I ended up giving up on my list of things I needed to do and legged it back. I know I could avoid this by not being so decadent to still have the cleaner come but still...!

Almost a routine!

Harry has, of his own accord, settled into something that could be called a routine. The most important part of this to me is the night time!

He actually does pretty well as he takes a feed around 9:30 in the evening and is alseep by 10:30ish, waking for a feed sometime between 3 and 4 during the night, and then waking again at about 7:30. As he settles quickly after his night time feed I'm doing pretty well for sleep all things considered.

Why then am I so damn tired!? :(

First week home alone with Harry

Mark went back to work on Monday so Harry and I have been left to our own devices. Monday and Tuesday were pretty quiet and we stayed at home - on Tuesday mainly because I had to wait around for the midwife to turn up to weigh him.

On Wednesday Alison came to see us in the morning and thoughtfully arrived armed with bagels for us for brunch - especially good for me as I'd not found time for breakfast... In the afternoon we picked up Tully and went to ballet which Harry missed as he slept through the entire thing...

On Thursday Mark asked if I wanted to meet up with him and a few others from work for lunch as they were going out to celebrate him having worked at Thermo (in it's various guises) for 15 years!!!! One day he's going to have to get a real job!

Friday Mark decided he deserved a day off! We wandered into Sale to register Harry and then spent the rest of the day waiting around for the midwife again... Ho hum. I'm pleased they are still monitoring Harry's weight as he is still below birth weight but I'll be glad when they discharge us as they never turn up when they say they will which drives me insane that I have to just sit here and wait for them...

A rather traumatic 2 weeks...

Sorry it's been a while but I've a good excuse - honest! Although it does mean another longwinded post!!!!

A week last Monday I found out that Grandpa's funeral was to be a week last Friday so we made various arrangements for childcare so that I could attend. Then, on the Tuesday Harry wasn't himself at all. After a couple of calls to the midwife hot line during the evening I still wasn't happy so at 10pm I took him to A&E assuming I'd be sent home again, told not to be so neurotic but reassured all the same that he was ok.

However, what happened instead was that we were admitted and not let out again for 9 days. They knew from blood tests he had an infection of some sort, and did every test imaginable to try and identify what precise infection he had. We never did get a conclusive answer, but the lumbar puncture test came back showing suspected meningitis and he was promptly put on a course of antibiotics to treat it.

The first few days I was a bit of a mess, and I dread to think what the couple of the nurses that saw me at my lowest thought. The combination of worry for Harry, grieving for my Grandpa, worry about how Tully and consequently Mark were coping, lack of sleep and general post delivery hormones completely knocked me for six and somewhat pathetically I spent most of Wednesday and Thursday in tears and wanting my Mum... Unfortunately Mum was busy looking after Gran and making funeral arrangements so I just caused her additional worry but phoning her up frequently in floods of tears. Nice!

Anyway, to my distress I missed the funeral, and also missed out on seeing June who was over from Tenerife last week, and meeting up with Sam and Martin who were in Sheffield for Martin's operation.

Since last weekend things got slowly better as having got the funeral out the way Mum and Dad whizzed over to see me, and Harry started to respond to the antibiotics and I could see that he was beginning to get better.

We were finally let home late on Thursday afternoon. It was a bit scary - it's surprising how quickly one becomes institutionalised - but things are mostly going well so far. Plus on the good news front - I am rather chuffed to fit back into my pre-pregnancy jeans despite scoffing for England whilst in hospital. Yey!

I'll let Harry and Tully tell their own stories, although it may take a few days to properly catch up...

I'm an Aunt!

It's been a busy week for the Marrows family! Congratulations go to Chris and Chrissy as my neice, Isabella, was born this morning at 3:03am. She weighed in at a very respectable but not too hurty 7lbs 8ozs.

Sad News

Earlier today Dad phoned with some sad news - my Grandpa passed away this morning.

He was an amazing man; someone I admired and respected greatly. I have some incredibly fond memories of him, especially from my youth when I used to love going to stay for 'holidays' with him and Gran.

I'm feeling a little guilty as I haven't had chance to go to see my grandparents since April - I just hope he knew how much I loved him. I certainly know how proud he's always been of not just me but all his family.

Harry's Arrival

There were several things that weren't ideal about Harry's arrival, and whilst I'm being a bit self indulgent writing about it here I get rather teary when I think about it so I'm hoping that the process of writing down will be somewhat cathartic for me.

08:00 - Tully had been sent home from nursery yesterday as she'd been vomiting, and I'd been up and down with her all night. So despite being really tired and only having had a couple of hours sleep when I woke at 8 noticing mild contractions I decided to get up and make sure they were real and didn't fade away to give Mum and Dad maximum notice to start driving over as they'd been called in to help.

11:00 - The contractions are relatively mild in terms of pain, but coming regularly every 3-4 minutes so we decide to head to hospital as we know a couple of people that have been caught short with their second for being too complacent. Luckily as it's half term Alicia (our baby sitter) and her Mum Maria are around and Tully happily goes to play with them for an hour or so as Mum and Dad are still a little way away.

12:00 - We arrive as Wythenshawe and are sent to triage where I am assessed. I am about 2-3cm dilated, but apparently 'not in established labour' yet despite still getting contractions every 3 minutes or so. The head is still a little high and the cervix is still too thick. Also, I think that I am generally to calm in my appearance which was incidentally my downfall when I went in with Tully - the midwives never seem to believe that it's for real. On the very (very) off chance I have another I must learn to be more histrionic about things as it's clearly the only way to get taken seriously. Anyway, more on that later. I am told to keep mobile, given a bed in a little room off the ward by triage and the midwife agreed with Mark that I may be in established labour in a couple of hours or so. We decided to go for a wander to the shop to buy some snacks and to phone Mum and Dad and make sure they've arrived safely etc.

13:15 - We get back from our walk. The contractions are much much stronger now and getting really very painful. I get a birthing ball and bounce a bit but am still just about coping with the pain using my TENS machine.

13:45 - I am now struggling to cope with the pain, Mark suggests getting someone in to assess me and I suggest we wait til 2 because then it's 2 hours from my first assessment, grit my teeth and get on with it.

14:00 - Mark goes outside to see if someone can come and see how we are getting on. He is told they are just starting a shift change and someone will be in soon.

14:15 - I am in a lot of pain now, and the midwife that did my first assessment spots that I'm leaning over the bed in tears and pops in. She brings me a canister of gas and air but as with Tully it makes me feel quite nauseous so I only use it sporadically. It's about 14:30 by the time she examines me and I'm gutted to discover I'm still only 3cm dilated. I think this is where it all starts to go wrong as I'm sure this midwife now believes me to be a drama queen rather than being the opposite and hating making any kind of fuss or putting anyone out. I could be wrong but I assume that she passes this belief on to the new midwife at the same time as passing on the medical information that nothing much has happened for a couple of hours so I'll be quite a while yet. She does at least concede I'm in established labour and also says that now I'm getting stronger contractions things should start to happen more in the next couple hours.

15:00 - Each contraction is complete agony and I think it's fair to say I am no longer even close to coping with the pain and screaming out with each one, partly because it hurts so much but I don't try and hold it in as I normally would in the hope that someone will move me to a delivery room soon, if only so that the other people on the ward can't hear me. Mark goes to ask if someone can come to see me and is told by the new midwife on duty, after confirmed his wife "is the one she can hear" that she'll be there in a couple of minutes. I've since learnt she was just sat at the desk doing paperwork which adds to me being convinction that my assumptions on my handover were correct. At this point I am assuming I'll still only be 4/5/6?cm dilated and have to put up with this for some time yet and know I will not manage with the TENS machine alone which is still my main pain relief, although I am using the gas and air more - nausea being more preferable to the pain...

15:25 - I now feel that I have to push and that nothing anybody can say to me will be able to stop me. I've still no pain relief and still not had anyone come to see me. I am also really trying not to push as I think I still have a long way to go. Mark again goes out to ask for someone to come in, and she again says she'll be in soon. Mark tells her I am saying I have to push and she does at least decide to get up to come in, although still with no urgency. She tells me that I need to calm down (I really far from calm or coping) and says after the current contraction she will get me to turn over (since about 14:30 have been on my knees and leaning onto the pillows) so she can examine me. I remember thinking there's no chance of that and scream out that I HAVE to push... I am still wearing my pants so she tries to slide them down and I am still desperately trying not to push as I've read so many takes of people thinking they need to long before they are really ready. At this point it's a bit of a blur, but I remember her saying she can see my baby's head; me shouting out that "it's not good" and refusing to listen to anyone telling me anything different; Mark telling me to listen to her, that it's ok and that she says I can push (but still in my head think he must be wrong as I've heard no such thing so desperately trying not to); her asking for a delivery trolley and to listen to my body and do what it tells me.

15:41 - Harry is born!

The whole thing happens in 15 contractions from the point where I get assessed by the initial midwife - I know because as a way to get me to cope Mark suggests we deal with them in small blocks and I just need to worry about getting through the next block of contractions. His head comes out on the 14th, and his body on the 15th.

It doesn't get much better from here either - I can't complain that my care at this point was left as she made sure I didn't need stitches and completed everything she needed to for safety's sake, but we had to wait almost 3 hours for him to be weighed / measured etc as she had to go to attend to someone else on the ward. It was a bit embarrassing that people kept coming in saying things like 'Blimey - we don't normally have babies up here!' and asking and we had to say we didn't know. Eventually a more mature healthcare assistant came in to say hello and see how we were and somehow she seemed to realise this was a bit rubbish and went off to find somebody to get things moving. As was explained to me later, in a delivery room you have the dedicated focus of a midwife to you and your baby, but as I was still on the ward there was just the one for everyone there. I asked how often babies were delivered in this ward and was told 'not never but not very often'. I later pushed this again and eventually got told about 1 every 4 months (i.e. about 3 a year). This in a maternity unit that delivers well over 500 babies a month...

I still feel like I'm making a fuss by writing all this down as I am well aware I'm not the first person to give birth with practically no pain relief. I think the thing that upsets me is that I feel like I was ignored / dismissed and that someone should have come to check on me earlier. If I'd known I was so close my state of mind would have been much better. Part of the problem is that anyone that knows either Mark or I know that we communicate urgency etc by the vocabulary we use, rather than by tone. Neither of us likes to be thought of as demanding, and we are amateurs at this so didn't know that we ought to be more insistent, but I genuinely don't know what we would have needed to have done to get someone to pay us attention either.

Anyway, it's done; both of us survived and are healthy etc which is the most important thing. But I also know I'll always feel slightly aggrieved and disappointed by the experience and whereas I thought everything about my care with Tully was wonderful, I have definitely been left with a sour taste in my mouth this time.

Less than ideal...

Yesterday Tully was slightly listless and wanted a sleep in the day which is normally unheard of. Then she called for me in the night and I noticed she was running a fever. She seemed quite a lot better this morning - she was certainly full of beans although did complain that lots of parts of her ached - and I ignored my instinct to keep her at home, gave her a dose of Calpol and sent her off to nursery regardless.

In the middle of the afternoon I receive a phone call from nursery to say she'd just been violently sick, and has subsequently been sick 3 more times since we've brought her home. Mark has now also retired to bed with a mild fever and feeling a little nauseous.

Who bets I go into labour tonight?

Mum and Dad are on high alert to jump into the car regardless of time of day or night as Tully isn't really allowed into nursery until 48 hours after she was last sick (although they know our situation and say they would look after her for a couple of hours is need be whilst Mum and Dad race across the country), and luckily Sarah is happy to equally cover for a couple of hours if things should start in the night. Honestly - things are never simple are they?

Bump!

Just for laughs for anyone that's not seen me recently - here I am doing my best Mr Greedy impression... This picture was taken 1 day after my due date.

To allow you to do a rough comparison from last time - here is the post from 10 days before Tully was due.

There's been no further sign of him arriving after the events on Wednesday evening. I hope he hurries up though - all this waiting about is just tedious. That and Mark is fancying a day off work tomorrow! ;) Also we are in trouble if he's not arrived by Wednesday as the Wills family go away and we haven't got a back up plan for anyone to look after Tully!!! Eeep!

False alarm

Last night I started getting contractions at around 9pm. They were a bit odd and I wasn't entirely convinced I was in labour, but I also couldn't rule it out as during the day there had been numerous similarities with events that happened the day leading up to be going into labour with Tully.

So, given the time of night we decided it was wise to take Tully to Holly's house anyway, the worst case being that she'd have an extra night sleeping over, the best case being they'd not all get woken up at 2 in the morning...

It was all very odd - although I never had any braxton hicks contractions either with Tully or previously in this pregnancy I don't think that was what I had last night as all the things that are meant to clam them didn't work at all and I was having regular contractions through until 2ish this morning, but then they all just fizzled out. Ho hum. I'm thinking it can't be long now though as there are far too many little indicators that things are about to happen... I'll keep you posted.

New Camera

Our new camera arrived today. Our old one has taken a bit of a hammering as it's gone so many places randomly thrown in my handbag primarily in a quest to make sure I can keep Tully's blog updated. Although really that's just an excuse as it still takes good pictures, it just looks a bit battered. But we got it just before Tully was born so the imminent arrival of boy slug seems an ideal time to treat ourselves to another...

Anyway, we decided on the Sony DSC-T300 to upgrade our Sony DSC-T3 as we've been so pleased with it.

Initial impressions are mixed - it seems much more complicated to do some of the basics, but maybe I just need to learn some of the shortcuts I know on the current camera. Also one of the things I especially liked about our old camera compared to other people's I've seen recently was that the battery charged in situ in the camera, but it must be the modern way as this one requires the battery to be removed and inserted into a special cradle to charge as with other newish cameras I've seen. Weird... How can that be better?

On the plus side the screen is HUGE, I'm loving the larger zoom, and the picture quality is much better.

The big room move!

This weekend was rather busy - although sadly more for Mark than for me. He took a car full of stuff to the tip / recycling centre, dragged LOADS of stuff up to the loft and brought a whole load of other (baby) stuff back down again(!), moved furniture around between the 2 main bedrooms and put up a cot. And somewhere in the middle of all that he also found time to take Tully to her swimming lesson, take her to the park, for us all to go to the library and have lunch out at Oca, go and do the weekly shop and go to the carpet shop to make final decisions on flooring!

I on the other hand mostly sat about - I honestly did try and help as much as I could but it has to be said my efforts were meagre to say the least. Anyhow, everything is pretty much sorted for when boy slug decides to put in an appearance and I have to say upstairs is looking really good!

For those especially interested the front bedroom now has the cot in and Mark and I have officially moved into the back room - which we'll 'lend' out when people come to stay as the double bed is still all set up in the front and poor boy slug will have to share with his parents for a couple of nights!

Family Portrait

It's not often that we get dressed up, and it's equally not often we think get a picture of us together, but we remembered to ask someone to take a photo of us on Saturday so here it is! I think we scrub up quite well as a family!

Vics and Fraser's Wedding

We left Brighton this morning and drove to the hotel where the wedding was being held - the Newick Park Hotel.

Wow - I always knew Vics would ensure her wedding day was spectacular but it was absolutely amazing. Newick Park Hotel is a small country house hotel and they'd hired the entire place for the day. The back drop was stunning, and it was all helped by having clear blue skies!

Vics (when she finally arrived!) looked beautiful - apparently there were hair traumas which meant she was almost 30 minutes late...

Other than that the day passed without a hitch, although I felt a little bad for them when they sent for a rather long trek to take photographs by the lake! In fact they seemed to have a lot of photos taken of them full stop poor things. Luckily Tully and I managed to catch Vic on one of her very short breaks!

They had arranged for childminders for the evening as the dinig room was quite small so the few children that had the honour of being invited, Tully included, went off to their own party as we went through for dinner. I was a little worried about how she'd feel but we'd talked about it several times in advance and she was so brave! In fact she had a whale of a time: we couldn't get her to leave later and whenever we popped in to check on her she shooed us away as she was having too much fun...

Vics had given me the honour of speaking on her behalf 'best woman' style, and luckily they had the speeches before dinner which meant I was over my nerves and could properly enjoy the food which was delicious.

All in all I had a fabulous weekend!

Off to Vics Wedding

Finally the big weekend has arrived - it's Vics wedding and I have to say I'm very excited. We drove to Brighton today and stayed at the Metropole on the front, which meant we got to go on the beach, as well as have a little wander around Brighton.

I fell in love with the place when I came here (a lot!) whilst working with Southern Water, and I still think it's one of my favourite places in the UK now so it was lovely to wander past some of the places I used to go and have a reminisce!

House Stuff

After initially struggling to come to terms with not being at work I have decided it's actually quite good being a lady of leisure - if only because it means I can arrange to get all the little jobs that have needed doing around the house for the last 4 years done as I have enough time to organise!

I've only been off for 2 weeks so far, but in that time I have:
  • had quite a major de-clutter
  • had the landing floorboards replaced
  • had the weird coving style skirting boards upstairs replaced
  • had a new tv aerial fitted
  • had the leaky toilet fixed
  • had Cloudy fixed (twice!)

  • and made arrangements for:
  • new internal doors to be fitted
  • new landing and stairs carpet to be fitted
  • new flooring in the bathroom and toilet to be fitted
  • the side of the bath to be fixed
  • the steamed up double glazing panes to be replaced
  • someone from one of the charity shops to come around to collect a load of stuff
  • someone to paint the toilet and bathroom (how lazy is that!?)

  • I'm about halfway through my list of house stuff - any chance I'll get it complete before himself decides it's time to say hello to the world?

    Pixels is here!

We went to collect our new car today which has been named Pixels.

It's a Nissan Qashqai 2.0 Tekna 2WD, the choosing of which has taken us a very long time (on and off over a series of about 18 months!). We were finally forced into making a decision as my maternity leave approached as it was far too much like hard work managing with just 1 car when I was on maternity leave with Tully.

Choosing the Qashqai ended up being quite an easy decision, choosing the spec was fairly straightforward, but choosing which engine took slightly longer partly because we really struggled to find a 2l petrol version to test drive. After much hunting the dealer in Boston came up trumps during our trip to Mum and Dads a few weeks ago. It was immediately obvious that this was the one for us and as the salesman did us a very good deal we went ahead. Buying in Boston has the added bonus of providing an excuse to have another weekend with my parents which means we get a lovely long lie in!

The naming is a bit of a long story. I wanted to call it Moo (as most people seem to pronounce it Cashcow) but Tully said that was a stupid name and that it should be called Pixels (although I have no idea where she got that from). Tully also has a name for the baby that neither Mark or I are keen on so we did a deal: she names the car and we name the baby. So Pixels it is!

I'm really (really) pleased with it but Tully isn't - apparently it's too red...

    Early Maternity Leave

In theory I should be working for another 2 1/2 weeks but my SPD has been getting harder to handle at work and after another visit to the doctor I've been signed off until the end. That was on Monday but I ended up working one of my busiest days in a while yesterday whilst I handed everything I've been working on over to the various people that will be covering my job whilst I'm away.

Today was therefore my first day at home and it's very odd. I'm feeling a bit lost if I'm honest, I suppose because I'm not mentally prepared for finishing so early. And to make things worse I'm just sat here not able to do very much and spotting lots of 'jobs' that need doing around the house and getting increasingly frustrated that I can't do any of them.

I was trying to work out if I took things slowly if I'd be capable of painting the bathroom and toilet earlier. You'll be pleased to know even I decided the task was beyond me but it's all sooo annoying! Poor Mark - I think he may get somewhat nagged over the next few weeks!

    Big Bruise

On wednesday morning I slipped getting into the bath and banged my leg on the side of it. I am quite proud of the bruise!

    Nesting?

This evening I decided it was absolutely imperative that I completely rearrange the contents of the kitchen. I hadn't realised when I started just how much I'd move otherwise it probably would have warranted a before and after picture! Mark had popped out when I decided to start and I'll not tell you what he said when he got back and saw my efforts given I was meant to be relaxing...

    Holiday!

Hooray - I've booked a holiday! Now I know it may be a bit premature but I figured I needed something to look forward to whilst I'm stuck at home with a baby for the next few months!!!!

So next spring we are going back to Northumberland, staying at Village Farm Cottages in Coquet Lodge. As an added bonus we've persuaded Mum and Dad to book Kielder Chalet for the same week so we have some assistance with childcare! How sneaky was that!?

    Exciting weekend in Nottingham!

Ok, so not very exciting really but nice all the same. We had decided it would be a nice idea to have a weekend on our own before boy slug arrives in a few weeks but as I'm a bit broken and walk around very much we struggled to decide where to go.

Had I been more mobile I'd have liked to go to Norfolk but in the end we decided on Nottingham as it's not too far from Mum and Dad's, in roughly the right direction for home so Mum and Dad could meet us there on the last day and would have nice restaurants and be ok for a few little potters out and about.

We booked into the Hilton partly because we quite like Hiltons, partly because it's very central, and partly because I thought I could book myself a treatment or two in the spa. Sadly I was thwarted in the latter part of that plan as by the time I phoned up to book in they were already fully booked with hen parties. Ho hum.

We had a fab Chinese Buffet meal on Saturday night, some nice lunches, and some BIG breakfasts!

We'd taken the PlayStation and loads of DVDs so spent quite a lot of time lounging around watching some of our fav films and old tv series, Mark got back into Ratchet and Clank and I read a couple of books. We also went to the cinema (which was luckily incredibly close by - 1 min walk for normal people, a 5 min walk for me!) and saw The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor which was quite entertaining if a bit too fanciful in places and would have been significantly better if Rachel Weisz still played Evelyn.

We also took a few walks around the city, down to the castle area and saw the Robin Hood statue, and past the Theatre Royal for a trip down memory lane as it was where we used to go to the Panto when I was little. We also did some general lazing around with no small children to worry about! Bliss!

    Vics' Hen weekend

I was lucky enough to have another night away this weekend - it was Vics' hen weekend! So on Friday afternoon I caaught a train and headed to Oxford. Helen, Vics cousin, had done a sterling job with the organisation and had found these lovely apartments right in the centre of the city for us to stay in. She had also somehow arranged for Sainsbury's to deliver groceries to us just as the first of us arrived.

Friday entailed an evening in whilst everyone turned up from wherever they were coming from. We were meant to be going punting during the day on Saturday but unfortunately the only thing that Helen couldn't pre-arrange - the weather - let us down. Instead we went for an organised boat trip along the river, and then got taxis to the rather aptly named pub we should have punted to for lunch instead.

After lunch it was back to the apartment for a cup of tea and for everyone to get ready for the afternoon's activities. The rest of the day for the fit and able was a burlesque dance class, then party drinking games back at the apartment assisted by a semi-clad butler, a dinner in a private room at the Malmaison and finally going on to a club.

Even without being disabled by my stupid pelvis thing I'd realised that most of this would be much better enjoyed whilst partaking of several alcoholic beverages, so I had decided to leave them all to it and get out of the way, and had booked my return train for same time the burlesque class started. So after laughing at them all in their outfits I said my farewells and headed back to Manchester in time to put Tulster to bed.

I'd wondered if I'd regret my decision once I got there, but I felt like such a burden most of the time as I can't walk about much it was definitely the right thing to do. I'm really looking forward to the wedding now! Hope you had a fab time Vic! X

    Ouch

I have been getting increasing levels of discomfort in my pelvis over the last 3 weeks or so, ranging from just being aware I have a pelvis to quite significant pain. It varies from day to day, but today is especially painful so I decided to pop to the doctors. Using the magic of t'interweb I had correctly self diagnosed myself as suffering with SPD, and the lovely doctor is going to refer me to an obstetric physiotherapist.

My main concern is doing my best to make sure it doesn't get any worse, as whilst it's not good at the moment it is at least bearable, and nowhere near as bad as it sounds like it could get in it's severest forms.

Don't hold back, tell it like it is...

On the back of a depressing day at work I say to Tully that I'd like to be 3 again, and that it must be fun being her.

She replies that yes it is fun, but that "you're too big and will just get bigger and bigger and older and older until you go into the ground and are dead..."

Thanks for that Tuls - it that really cheered me up!

    Dirty Dancing!

About 2 years ago Lindsey phoned me up to say that she'd heard that there was a West End production of Dirty Dancing, and that she couldn't contemplate going to see if with anyone else if I was up for it! Needless to say I was! But somehow through a mixture of high ticket demand (when we first started looking you had to book about 9 months to a year in advance) and disorganisation on our part we have only just managed to organise ourselves to go - and that was really only brought about by my realisation in February that if we didn't go before around August time it was going to be another 2 years before we'd manage it!

So, the men were called in to look after our respective kids and Lindsey and I had a day off and went to London. Actually I took 2 days off as I travelled to Kenilworth during the day on Friday to spend some time with her and her kids as I hadn't seen Ewan since he was 4 months old in April 2005, and I'd not met George (now 16 months) at all!

On Saturday morning we left Saul in charge and headed to the station to catch an incredibly overcrowded train to Marylebone station. On arrival we went to Covent Garden for lunch and a general meander around soaking up the atmosphere before wandering down the Strand to the theatre for the show.

Well, what can I say. It was FAB!!!! Somewhat cheesy in places, but completely wonderful nonetheless... Lindsey and I had spent much time the evening before boring Saul with wondering how they would have adapted the script, and how they might do various scenes on stage, but I'm pleased to say thanks to a very clever stage design it had been only very slightly changed from the film. It has to be said the audience was approximately 90% female and of a certain age, and the few men that were there looked rather bored throughout (they must have earned themselves serious brownie points for going along!), but all the girls were loving it!

A few words of advice for anyone thinking of going. If you are female get on with it - you won't regret it. If you are male and thinking of taking your other half then don't: pay for her to take a mate as she'll enjoy it loads more without you sat next to her tutting all the way through ;) And finally, not that I'm obsessed, but girls if you have an even vaguely weak bladder go to the loo somewhere before you get to the theatre - the audience ratio means the queues when you get there are huge!

    Day out at Crosby

After wussing out of going camping this weekend with Jon and Mand, we decided to go to for a day out at Crosby beach instead as none of us had been to see Antony Gormley's Another Place before.

I have to admit I've seen more picturesque beaches, but I'm not sure it was any the worse for that, and Tully certainly had no complaints. My only criticism is that as I'm somewhat lumbered with a weak bladder at the moment and, at the end we went to anyway, there wasn't a public loo! Eeep!

    Night out

A couple of weeks ago when collecting Tully from nursery I was given a note to say one of the other Mums was organising a Mums night out. I decided to sign up as I'm always moaning that I don't get out enough, and that I don't have enough friends! I was a little nervous as I knew that none of the Mum's I've got to know a little were going. Despite being poorly all week Mark convinced me I should still go along tonight and I'm glad I did.

There were 7 of us in the end, and it was nice to put names and children to faces. We just went into Sale, meeting in the Slug and Lettuce and then heading next door to Da Vinci's for a meal. Very enjoyable!

    Our Holiday

As per usual Tully has stolen all the thunder when it comes to blogging our holiday to Suffolk. From my perspective it was the most enjoyable holiday we've had since having Tully - both fun and relaxing.

The accommodation was really nice - we had a private patio area that caught the sun all afternoon and evening, the rest of the public grounds including the play area, lake and the animals were beautiful, and the pool was amazing, especially as we never had to share it!

On the Monday morning I had booked some time out and had a massage with a local therapist that the farm had recommended when we booked. Lovely! Another reason it was so relaxing was the fact the cottage had freeview including CBeebies! Now I normally try not to let Tully watch TOO much telly per day, but when she got up we turned the magic of CBeebies on and left her to it giving ourselves lovely lie ins every day! Yey! And I'm not feeling too guilty about it as the rest of every day was really action packed too!

Other highlights for me were seeing where Mark went to school, the trip to Walton-on-the-Naze and going to the Waddington Air Show on the way back home.

    Day off!

Today Mark and I decided to have a spontaneous day off work. We had a really lovely day - after dropping Tully at nursery I went back to bed and had a bit more snooze time and then read my book for a while.

Then we went out to lunch at Francs which was really delicious, before trying out the cinema that opened relatively recently in Altrincham for the first time and seeing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

It was a little crazy at times with very bad science which always upsets me (I can't watch most cartoons as the apparent lack of gravity and other bad science drives me insane!) but overall it was quite enjoyable. Jonny has already given it a better review than I could here, and I pretty much agree with everything he says especially the iron fillings and the fridge comments! The only bit I feel I need to add is the annoying sporadic use of magnetism throughout - something theoretically showing magnetic type properties that seems to come and go randomly. Grrr! :)

    10 Years!

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of Mark and I getting together. We both kind of forgot about it on the day as since we got married neither of us have done anything to recognise the day. Luckily I have a recurring appointment in my work Outlook Calendar to tell me, so it's lucky I've never got a new job (or at least a job in a new company) otherwise we'd never have known!

Maybe one day we'll go back to Hungary and revisit Budapest, and more specifically Keszthely on Lake Balaton where we got it together after each partaking of a cocktail or 5! :)

    Scan

We had the second scan today, and took Tully with us so she could see what it was all about. The baby was in a slightly odd position so they couldn't quite do all the checks they'd normally do but everything they could see was normal.

The one thing they could check was the sex (hurrah - I don't like surprises at all so I'm not sure how I'd have coped if they couldn't tell) and it's a boy! I was very surprised as I was so sure it'd be a girl. I can't see me with a boy somehow but at least Mark will have someone on his side instead of having 3 females nagging him!

    Llandudno

We decided on the spur of the moment to go away camping this weekend. I found a campsite about an hour away that could take us that was pretty good - it had everything you'd need in a campsite: flat pitches, a play area, decent toilet blocks (although bizarrely despite having 2 there within spitting distance of each other at one end of a rather large site - surely it would have been sensible to put one at each end!?) but I think we'll try a few more before finalising on a 'local' site we use regularly for such sporadic trips away.

However the good part of the weekend was the trip to Llandudno. I've never been before as I've either stopped along the coast a bit closer to home, gone to Conwy or carried on past into Snowdonia or onto Anglesey. And I have to say it was lovely and far nicer than any of the other places I'd normally go...

The sea front was an impressive Georgian facade, the beach was clean and it had everything you would want from a tradition English seaside resort with none of the tackiness. I was very impressed and will definitely be going back. The only slight down was the lazy donkeys that packed on for the day just slightly too early! ;) Poor Tulster.

I've already started looking for a campsite that is a little bit closer to it...

    Quick trip to Florida

I had to 'pop' to Florida this week. I set off on Tuesday morning following the bank holiday, and got home again 3 days later. It was a bit strange as I only got to my hotel at about 10:30pm on Tuesday, so only really had 1 evening away (evenings and nights spent in airports and on planes don't count!)

I've had trips this short before, but always in Philly without the domestic US transfer and it really makes a difference to the length of time it feels like you are away for...

My one evening was quite entertaining though... I joined in with an organised event hosted by Team Cuisine!... We were split into 7 teams with each team preparing 1 dish for the entire group: my team prepared stuffed mushrooms. Other idshes on the menu were stuffed tomatoes, stir fried prawns, chicken kebabs, spinach and goats cheese parcels, endives, and a dessert. It was all really delicious and good fun too.

    Magic cleaner!

OK, so I know this is very sad indeed, but I have discovered a magic product.

The sealant around the bath was getting disgustingly mouldy and nothing I tried really seemed to shift it. I randomly decided to Google for some advice a couple of weeks ago and found someone recommending this from Lakeland... So a couple of weekends ago I made a special trip to get some along with some jelly moulds for special Eurovision puddings. I do love Lakeland and find it one of those shops where I always end up buying all kinds of extra things whilst there, but I was mostly well behaved - only 4 unplanned items made it into the basket! ;)

Anyway, back to the magic cleaner. If I'd known how magic it would be I would have braved the embarrassment and shared before and after pictures with you. As it is you'll just have to believe me that the bathroom looks very nearly almost like new and I am very very impressed!

    Eurovision

Bah! Russia did not deserve to win!!!! And whilst we certainly didn't deserve to win we really didn't deserve to come last. hope they can find a way to make the voting a bit fairer. Even Malta defected this year and failed to give us any points!

Anyway, this year not only Jonny and Mandy came round, but also Steve and Karen as they had already arranged to come and visit the Hills before any of us realised it was Eurovision weekend. It was lovely to see them as we were out of town the last time they came to visit and we'd not seen them since their wedding in 2005! Whilst I don't begrudge them having a weekend off parenthood it was a shame we didn't get to meet Poppy... It did make me think that it was about time Mark and I had a weekend break though as we've not had any time away together since we went to Philadelphia last July! Mum and Dad beware! :)

As last year we played this drinking game - or rather everyone else did... Mand came up with the idea that I should eat a cocktail sausage every time they had to drink but I politely declined!:) Not as many key changes this year which let us down, but lots of costume changes, fireworks and even females in false beards! Fab!

The general standard was really quite high, and I do think other countries take their entries more seriously than us. As a collective once we collated our collective scores we put in votes for Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina, although my top score went to Ukraine, with Iceland and Bosnia in joint second place.

As per usual I provided far too much party food, as well as loads of lasagne, salad and garlic bread (perfect Eurovision fodder as it can be pre-prepared and then just shoved in the oven so you don't miss any of the action!). Overall a very good evening - just a bit of disappointment about the results...

    No water!

We woke up this morning to discover we had no water. Initially I thought it was just our road, but when I went to the shop to buy some bottled water so I could brew up I realised it must be more widespread. I still don't know how much of Sale was out but almost everyone in the store had trolleys of almost nothing but water, and the water aisle was looking particularly empty! Luckily just at that moment a man brought a pallet with some more on (although only 6 4 bottles packs) so I grabbed a couple and legged it quick!

It's strange though how removing the water supply just for a few hours (it came back on early afternoon) has such an impact on life! You don't appreciate how much you use it until it's gone! It really made me think about how people survive after various disasters when people lose not just a clean water supply but power too and in some cases their homes and possessions. Not that I thought it'd be a walk in the park before mind, but I was such a wuss today it made me wonder just how I'd cope if something bad really happened! Not well I'm guessing!

    Well, the news is out...!

This may surprise a few people but it isn't eating too many pies that is the cause my ever expanding midriff! It has been becoming increasingly difficult to hide so we've been slowly going public with the news that I'm once again pregnant over the last couple of weeks. I have to say it's a bit of a relief as it means I can finally breathe out at work and wear large elasticated trousers too!

I'm a bit over 18 weeks pregnant now, and whilst I don't remember exactly I'm sure I was much smaller when carrying Tully which was the last time I managed to get to this stage. So either this one is HUGE, or more likely my tummy muscles think I'm having a laugh and are on strike refusing to do as much work in holding everything in again...

We finally told Tully last week: needless to say she is very excited about becoming a big sister, and understands a surprisingly mature amount about what is going on now and will happen when the baby comes. Having said that I still think it'll come as a rather large shock to her when it arrives and she discovers she is no longer centre of attention.

We got for the 20 week scan in a couple of weeks (a week late as I have to go to the US the week I should go) so fingers crossed everything is still ok.

    Typecast?

    Tully: "Let's play a game!"
    Me: "Ok..."
Tully: "I can be the beautiful Princess, Daddy can be the handsome Prince, and you can be the evil wicked Witch!"
    Me: :S

    Holiday dilemma Over!

And we're going to Suffolk! I know, I know, it's not what you were expecting to hear! If I'm honest it's not what I was expecting to hear either! :) But when we got quotes back from the hotels in Austria even though the Euro amount was similar to last year the exchange rate makes the cost stupidly unjustifiably expensive. So we had a UK rethink and Mark suggested Suffolk based on a) him revisiting his past (and possibly school too?), b) near lovely beaches, c) opportunity for a day trip to London...

So we've booked one of the cottages at Gladwins Farm and I'm really quite looking forward to it! As part of the booking confirmation they've sent their brochure and the cottages look even lovelier than on the website, the photos of the playarea shows it's 4 times the size you can see on the web, we (and by that I mean Tully) can help feeding sheep, goats, ducks, chickens etc (which though not advertised on the web I'd guessed by reading the comments), plus they included a price list for the spa treatments (very cheap so I'll book 2!) and for the home / farm cooked frozen meals that are also incredibly reasonable so I can be lazy and avoid cooking even on the days we don't eat out! Fab!

    Holiday Dilemma Continued...

So, over 2 months on and we are no nearer having booked a holiday! This is very un-marrows like and I'm starting to get really quite worried. We've also come full circle.

Not long after my last post we ruled out Austria, and did some serious research and contemplation into going to Florida before finally discounting as by the time we'd be able to go with work schedules being as crazy as they are it would be much to hot for us.

Then we thought about Denmark, getting the ferry and doing some touring about. Again we did a lot of serious research but finally discounted this option because of the long drive to Harwich and then long ferry crossing seemed silly when we live so close to Manchester airport. It does look a really lovely place to go for a family holiday though so we may well go one year in the future.

Then, Mark had the idea that we shouldn't have a traditional week's holiday, but have a month of taking Friday and Monday off each week and having a series of long weekends. A good idea but when I thought about it properly I worried I'd be so exhausted with all the packing / unpacking / rushing about etc that it would take away some of the enjoyment so that idea went out the window too.

However, as part of the above plan I found a wonderful looking farm place in Cornwall, and we'd be going there for a week if it wasn't that they were fully booked by the time I got around to phoning up to see if they had any availability. Still - I'm thinking this is a serious option for next year!
So now we are considering Austria again. I've sent off for quotes from 2 hotels. The Hotel Alpenrose I was considering before, and the Sport-hotel Achensee which is another I've always thought sounded good. So we'll see what happens.

    Mandy's Birthday Weekend

Jonny and Mand hosted the usual bank holiday festivities to celebrate Mandy's birthday. First off out for a curry on Friday evening. Mark was still in the US (at very short notice) but as we'd already arranged for Alicia to come and look after Tully I thought it seemed silly for me to stay in on my own. I had my usual at the Spice Garden - Chicken Sangrila - which is rather unusual but I love it and I can get it at so few places I figure why not! I only eat here once a year after all.

Then on Saturday a BBQ party in their back garden. Tully and I went round mid afternoon - but Mark decided to stay at home as his flight was late getting him home and he was feeling a bit rough. We had lots of fun once Tully got over her initial shyness. The Goodridges were there when we first arrived so she had 3 playmates, then with perfect timing just as they were leaving the Braithwaites arrived so the play mates were instantly replaced!
